The Boiler Upgrade Scheme provides upfront funding towards eligible heat pump installations in England and Wales.

Who Is Eligible for a Heat Pump Grant?

Both existing homes and qualifying self-build properties may be considered under the scheme.

One grant available per property
Most new-build properties aren't eligible, although qualifying self-build homes may be treated differently. The proposed installation must also comply with the scheme's technical requirements.
How the Heat Pump Grant Process Works
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme is installer-led, so much of the application is handled on the property owner's behalf.
The installation must be completed by an MCS-certified installer. The homeowner is contacted to confirm consent and eligibility before the application can progress.

A proper survey comes first
A grant is helpful, but it doesn't automatically mean that every home is ready for a heat pump. Before discussing equipment, we need to understand how the property holds and distributes heat.
Our survey considers the size and construction of your home, insulation, glazing, existing radiators, pipework and hot-water requirements. We also look at where the external and internal equipment could be positioned. This is particularly important across Essex, where housing ranges from compact Southend terraces and converted flats to larger rural properties beyond Chelmsford and Braintree.
Once the survey is complete, we can explain which system may be suitable, what work would be included and which level of heat pump funding could apply. If there's a remaining balance after the grant, finance options may be available, including 0% finance and plans from £15 per month. Finance is subject to status, lender approval and applicable terms.

Is every homeowner entitled to £9,000?
No. The £9,000 rate applies only to specific off-gas-grid properties and replacement heating types. Many other qualifying heat pump installations receive £7,500.
Do I receive the grant money directly?
Usually not. The scheme is installer-led, and the grant is deducted from the amount you pay for the eligible installation.
Can I get funding for an air-to-air heat pump?
Eligible air-to-air heat pumps can currently receive £2,500, provided the property and installation meet the scheme conditions.
Do I need to repay the grant?
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant isn't a loan, so it doesn't normally need to be repaid when all conditions have been met.
Can I use finance for the remaining cost?
